RESUMO

As a enrichment plant, ramie can be used for the phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. However, it is worth exploring the role of plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers in the process of plant growth and development and Cd adsorption. By measuring the agronomic traits, Cd content of aboveground and underground ramie, calculating the Cd transfer coefficient (TF) and Cd bioconcentration factors (BCF), and the correlation between various indicators. This study examined the effects of plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers on ramie's capacity for Cd accumulation and transportation. Plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie, reduced the Cd content of the underground ramie, and increased the TF. Among them, GA-1 increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie to 3 times more than that of the control and reduced the Cd content of the underground ramie by 54.76%. Salicylic acid (SA) increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie to three times more than that of the control. The combination of GA and foliar fertilizer reduced the Cd content of the aboveground and underground ramie and the TF and BCF of the underground ramie. After the hormones were sprayed, the TF of ramie had a significant positive correlation with the Cd content of the aboveground ramie; the BCF of the aboveground ramie had a significant positive correlation with the Cd content and TF of the aboveground ramie. The results indicate that Brassinolide (BR), gibberellin (GA), ethephon (ETH), polyamines (PAs), and salicylic acid (SA) have different effects on the enrichment and transport of Cd in ramie. This study provided an effective method to improve the capacity for ramie to adsorb heavy metals during cultivation.

RESUMO

The contamination of pathogenic micro-organisms and heavy metals in drinking water sources poses a serious threat to human health, which raises the demand for efficient water treatments. Herein, multi-functional capacitive deionization (CDI) electrodes were developed for the simultaneous decontamination of bacteria and heavy metal contaminants. Polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG), an antibacterial polymer, was deposited on the surface of the activated carbon (AC) electrode with the assistance of mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry. The main characterization results proved successful co-deposition of PDA and PHMG on the AC electrode, forming a hydrophilic coating layer in one step. Electrochemical analyses indicated that the AC-PDA/PHMG electrodes presented satisfactory capacitive behaviors, with outstanding salt adsorption capacity and cycling stability. The modified electrodes also exhibit excellent disinfection performance and heavy metal adsorption performance. The bacterial elimination rate of co-deposited electrodes grew along with the increase in the PHMG content. Particularly, AC-PDA/PHMG2 electrodes successfully removed and deactivated 99.11% Escherichia coli and 98.67% Pseudomonas aeruginosa (104 CFU mL-1) in water within 60 min. Furthermore, three flow cells made by AC-PDA/PHMG2 electrodes connected in series achieved efficient removal of salt, heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, and bacteria simultaneously, which indicated that the adsorption performance is significantly improved compared with pristine AC electrodes. These results denote the enormous potential of this one-step prepared multi-functional electrodes for facile and effective water purification using CDI technology.

RESUMO

Heavy metals (HMs) toxicity represents a global problem depending on the soil environment's geochemical forms. Biochar addition safely reduces HMs mobile forms, thus, reducing their toxicity to plants. While several studies have shown that biochar could significantly stabilize HMs in contaminated soils, the study of the relationship of soil properties to potential mechanisms still needs further clarification; hence the importance of assessing a naturally contaminated soil amended, in this case with Paulownia biochar (PB) and Bamboo biochar (BB) to fractionate Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu using short sequential fractionation plans. The relationship of soil pH and organic matter and its effect on the redistribution of these metals were estimated. The results indicated that the acid-soluble metals decreased while the fraction bound to organic matter increased compared to untreated pots. The increase in the organic matter metal-bound was mostly at the expense of the decrease in the acid extractable and Fe/Mn bound ones. The highest application of PB increased the organically bound fraction of Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu (62, 61, 34, and 61%, respectively), while the BB increased them (61, 49, 42, and 22%, respectively) over the control. Meanwhile, Fe/Mn oxides bound represents the large portion associated with zinc and copper. Concerning soil organic matter (SOM) and soil pH, as potential tools to reduce the risk of the target metals, a significant positive correlation was observed with acid-soluble extractable metal, while a negative correlation was obtained with organic matter-bound metal. The principal component analysis (PCA) shows that the total variance represents 89.7% for the TCPL-extractable and HMs forms and their relation to pH and SOM, which confirms the positive effect of the pH and SOM under PB and BB treatments on reducing the risk of the studied metals. The mobility and bioavailability of these metals and their geochemical forms widely varied according to pH, soil organic matter, biochar types, and application rates. As an environmentally friendly and economical material, biochar emphasizes its importance as a tool that makes the soil more suitable for safe cultivation in the short term and its long-term sustainability. This study proves that it reduces the mobility of HMs, their environmental risks and contributes to food safety. It also confirms that performing more controlled experiments, such as a pot, is a disciplined and effective way to assess the suitability of different types of biochar as soil modifications to restore HMs contaminated soil via controlling the mobilization of these minerals.

RESUMO

The presence of inorganic pollutants such as Cadmium(II) and Chromium(VI) could destroy our environment and ecosystem. To overcome this problem, much attention was directed to microbial technology, whereas some microorganisms could resist the toxic effects and decrease pollutants concentration while the microbial viability is sustained. Therefore, we built up a complementary strategy to study the biofilm formation of isolated strains under the stress of heavy metals. As target resistive organisms, Rhizobium-MAP7 and Rhodotorula ALT72 were identified. However, Pontoea agglumerans strains were exploited as the susceptible organism to the heavy metal exposure. Among the methods of sensing and analysis, bioelectrochemical measurements showed the most effective tools to study the susceptibility and resistivity to the heavy metals. The tested Rhizobium strain showed higher ability of removal of heavy metals and more resistive to metals ions since its cell viability was not strongly inhibited by the toxic metal ions over various concentrations. On the other hand, electrochemically active biofilm exhibited higher bioelectrochemical signals in presence of heavy metals ions. So by using the two strains, especially Rhizobium-MAP7, the detection and removal of heavy metals Cr(VI) and Cd(II) is highly supported and recommended.

RESUMO

A novel adsorbent, called dithiocarboxyl cornstalk (DTCS), was developed, and the effects of various parameters on the adsorption performance for Cd(II) with DTCS were investigated in this work. The results suggested that DTCS presented the efficient removal capacity for Cd(II) when the pH values, adsorption temperature, and oscillation rate were 3.0 to 6.0, 313 K, and 150 rpm, respectively. The adsorption kinetic data were more agreed with pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isotherm data could be characterized by Freundlich model. The thermodynamic data indicated the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The FTIR and SEM confirmed the chemisorption between Cd(II) and DTCS. Furthermore, to eliminate the secondary pollution, the waste filtrate generated in the preparation of DTCS was employed to remove Cd(II) through flocculation experiments. The results showed that the waste filtrate is a potential flocculant for the treatment of wastewater containing Cd(II).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Porphyra haitanensis now faces serious heavy metal pollution problems. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have been recognized as a novel class of sustainable solvents, which can be used for heavy metal removal. In this study, 28 kinds of NADESs were prepared and investigated as eluent in the removal of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), and copper (Cu) from P. haitanensis for the first time, and the adsorption mechanism of NADESs was also studied. RESULTS: The removals were greatly improved by NADESs compared with control where the removal rates of Pb, Cd, Cr, As and Cu were 17.4-87.54%, 57.54-100%, 9.8-48.59%, 21.32-78.24% and 11.68-79.73%, respectively. The optimal condition was 10% water content and solid-liquid ratio of 1:20. Moreover, the addition of 20% natural surfactant arabic gum can further increase the heavy metals removal rates of NADESs. The adsorption mechanism experiments showed that the pseudo second-order model and the Freundlich adsorption model can better explain the adsorption mechanism of NADESs on heavy metals removal. CONCLUSION: Taken together, a green and efficient method for removing heavy metals from P. haitanensis was established. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The primary advantage of a hollow structure is the likelihood of introducing diverse components in a single particle to achieve multiple missions. Herein, hollow microspheres with multicomponent nanocores (HMMNs) have been prepared based on a template-free strategy via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment of Chlorella. The resulting HMMNs retain the near-spherical hollow morphology and functional groups of the cell wall of Chlorella, obviating the need for templates and chemical modification. The elements (iron, cobalt, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, and phosphorus) naturally present within the Chlorella cells react to form hydroxyapatite/chlorapatite and magnetic nanocores without the need for exogenous chemical reagents. The performances of HMMNs for cadmium ion (Cd2+) removal and antibiotic detection are explored. HMMNs exhibit relatively high adsorbance of Cd2+ (1035.8 mmol/kg) and can be easily recovered by application of an external magnetic field. Ion exchange with Ca2+ and Mg2+ is shown to be the main mechanism of Cd2+ elimination. In addition, HMMNs are a suitable carrier for the construction of a magnetic immunosensor, as demonstrated by the successful development of such an immunosensor with acceptable analytical performance for the detection of neomycin in milk samples. The versatile applications of HMMNs result from their multicomponent nanocores, hollow structure, and the functional groups on their shell. This work not only offers a simple and eco-friendly strategy for the fabrication of novel HMMNs but also provides a valuable advanced material for contaminant detection and heavy-metal removal.

RESUMO

This study investigates the separation of two heavy metals, Cd(II) and Cu(II), from the mixed synthetic feed using a liquid-liquid extraction. The current study uses tri-octyl methylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) as the extractant (with tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a phase modifier), diluted in toluene, in order to investigate the selective extraction of Cd(II) over Cu(II) ions. We investigate the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a masking agent for Cu(II), when added in aqueous feed, for the selective extraction of Cd(II). Five factors that influence the selective extraction of Cd(II) over Cu(II) (the equilibrium pH (pHeq), Aliquat 336 concentration (Aliquat 336), TBP concentration (TBP), EDTA concentration (EDTA), and organic to aqueous ratio (O:A)) were analyzed. Results from a 25-1 fractional factorial design show that Aliquat 336 significantly influenced Cd(II) extraction, whereas EDTA was statistically significant for the antagonistic effect on the E% of Cu(II) in the same system. Moreover, results from optimization experiment showed that the optimum conditions are Aliquat 336 concentration of 99.64 mM and EDTA concentration of 48.86 mM-where 95.89% of Cd(II) was extracted with the least extracted Cu(II) of 0.59%. A second-order model was fitted for optimization of Cd(II) extraction with a R2 value of 0.998, and ANOVA results revealed that the model adequately fitted the data at a 5% significance level. Interaction between Aliquat 336 and Cd(II) has been proven via FTIR qualitative analysis, whereas the addition of TBP does not affect the extraction mechanism.

RESUMO

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are stimulus-responsive protein-based biopolymers that exhibit phase transition behavior. By joining them to synthetic phytochelatin (EC), EC-ELP fusion proteins with temperature sensitivity and metal-binding functionality were generated to remove heavy metal ions biologically. Three different EC domains (EC10, EC20, EC30) were incorporated into the ELP, and the EC-ELP fusion proteins were expressed in E. coli. Their thermal properties and metal binding abilities were then investigated according to the EC length. In addition, the feasibility of reusing EC-ELPs and the cadmium ion binding affinity of reused EC-ELPs were explored.

RESUMO

As a remedy for environmental pollution, a versatile synthetic approach has been developed to prepare polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) composite film (PVA-CDs) for removal of toxic cadmium ions. The CDs were first synthesized using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) of oil palms empty fruit bunch wastes with the addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and then the CDs were embedded with PVA. The PVA-CDs film possess synergistic functionalities through increasing the content of hydrogen bonds for chemisorption compared to the pure CDs. Optical analysis of PVA-CDs film was performed by ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Compared to the pure CDs, the solid-state PVA-CDs displayed a bright blue color with a quantum yield (QY) of 47%; they possess excitation-independent emission and a higher Cd2+ removal efficiency of 91.1%. The equilibrium state was achieved within 10 min. It was found that adsorption data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption uptake was 113.6 mg g-1 at an optimal pH of 7. Desorption experiments showhe that adsorbent can be reused fruitfully for five adsorption-desorption cycles using 0.1 HCl elution. The film was successfully applied to real water samples with a removal efficiency of 95.34% and 90.9% for tap and drinking water, respectively. The fabricated membrane is biodegradable and its preparation follows an ecofriendly green route.

RESUMO

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the performance of polypropylene (PP)/sisal fiber (SF)/banana fiber (BF) and chitosan-based hybrid (chitosan(CS)/SF)/BF) composite materials for the adsorptive removal of cadmium (Cd) ions from water waste. Polypropylene is harnessed for its importance in forming strong composite materials for various applications. Chitosan biopolymer encloses a great deal of amino and hydroxyl groups, which provide effective removal of Cd ions from wastewater. The batch adsorption studies proved that the removal of Cd ions was pH-dependent and attained optimum at pH 5.5 for both the composites. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied for the obtained experimental values. Based on the R2 values, it was evidenced that the adsorption process was best fitted with the Freundlich isotherm than Langmuir. The sorption capacity of CS/SF/BF hybrid composite (Cmax = 419 mg/g) is higher than PP/SF/BF composite (Cmax = 304 mg/g), and allows multilayer adsorption. Kinetics studies revealed that the pseudo-second-order model was followed during the removal of Cd ion from wastewater. The overall evaluation proved that though both the adsorbents are suitable for the removal of Cd ions, the efficiency of CS-based ternary composite material is better than PP-based composite.

RESUMO

Clay minerals are widely used to treat sewage containing heavy metals such as zinc and cadmium. In this study, the chemical reactivity of natural serpentine was signally improved through mechanochemical activation, achieving the efficient separation of Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) ions in a mixed solution. The activated serpentine would release a large amount of Mg2+ and OH- and thereby selectively precipitate Zn(Ⅱ) ions as an uncommon metamorphic zinc mineral, bechererite, in the presence of SO42-. By adjusting the parameters including grinding intensity, reaction temperature, serpentine dosage and salt species, the optimum conditions were determined and a 92% separation rate of Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) ions was achieved. The mechanochemical activation of natural clay minerals expresses a great potential for purification of heavy metal contaminated sewage, as well as the simultaneous separation and recovery of multi-metal secondary resources.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present the preparation of MoS2-modified magnetic biochar (MoS2@MBC) as a novel adsorbent by a simple hydrothermal method. MoS2@MBC contains abundant S-containing functional groups that facilitate efficient Cd(II) removal from aqueous systems. We employed various characterization techniques to explore the morphology, surface area, and chemical composition of MoS2@MBC; these included Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction,. The results indicated the successful decoration of the surface of MoS2@MBC with iron and MoS2, and a higher surface area of MoS2@MBC than that of unmodified biochar. Moreover, adsorption properties including thermodynamics and kinetics were investigated along with the effects of pH, humic acid, and ionic strength on the Cd(II) adsorption onto MoS2@MBC. The O-, C-, S-, and Fe-containing functional groups on the surface of MoS2@MBC led to an electrostatic attraction of Cd(II) and strong Cd-S complexation. The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models fitted best for the batch adsorption experiments results. The adsorption capacity of MoS2@MBC (139 mg g-1 on the basis of the Langmuir model) was 7.81 times higher than that of pristine biochar. The adsorption process was found to be pH-dependent. The experimental results indicated that MoS2@MBC is an effective adsorbent for removing Cd(II) from water solutions. Further, the adsorption process involved the complexation of Cd(II) with oxygen-based functional groups, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, Cd(II)-π interactions, metal-sulfur complexation, and inner-surface complexation. This work provides new insights into the Cd(II) ions removal from water via adsorption. It also demonstrates that MoS2@MBC is an efficient and economic adsorbent to treat Cd(II)-contaminated water.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to screen a strain for the removal of Cd2+ from aqueous solution and investigate the characterization and mechanism of the Cd2+ binding process. A novel strain of yeast showed high tolerance of cadmium, namely Cystobasidium oligophagum QN-3, was isolated from soils, which could resist 22,000 mg/L and 18,000 mg/L Cd2+ on PDA (potato dextrose agar) plate and in PDA liquid medium, respectively. Cd2+ binding experiment showed that the strain could remove Cd2+ from aqueous solution effectively, the maximum Cd2+ removal rate of 84.45% was achieved at initial Cd2+ concentration 30 mg/L. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that sorption of Cd2+ by cells could be associated with changes in the cell surface morphology. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed the important role of the functional groups OH, CO, NH2 , COO, PO, and CH on the cell surface in the binding of Cd2+ . The comparison of the binding ability of different cellular parts indicated a significant role of the cell wall played in the Cd2+ binding process. Pretreatment of the cells by boiling or ultrasonication could improve the biosorption capacity of QN-3. In addition, QN-3 exhibited selective and preferential property of binding capacity for other heavy metals, such as Pb2+ , Cu2+ , Cd2+ , Zn2+ , and Ni2+ . These data suggested the promising use of Cystobasidium oligophagum QN-3 as an effective and friendly biosorbent for cadmium or other heavy metals decontamination in the environment.

RESUMO

The capacity of biochars derived from agricultural wastes to remove Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution and contaminated mine water was evaluated using laboratory-based batch sorption experiments. To examine immobilization of heavy metals, biochars produced in a commercial-scale mobile pyrolizer from feedstocks: poultry litter; lucerne shoot; vetch shoot; canola shoot; wheat straws; and sugar-gum wood, were tested in a liquid-based system. Biochars were characterized by FTIR, XPS and XRD before and after the mine water treatment. Lucerne biochar had the highest Langmuir sorption capacity of Cd(II) (6.28 mg g-1) and vetch-derived biochar had the highest Cu(II) sorption capacity (18.0 mg g-1) at pH 5.5. All the biochars exhibited higher sorption capacity for Cu(II) than for Cd(II). The smaller ionic radius and higher electronegativity of Cu(II), and the PO43-, CO32- and N-containing functional groups of biochars enhanced their binding affinity. The results demonstrated that poultry litter-derived biochar was effective at removal of the Cd(II) and Cu(II) from mine water up to the levels recommended by the World Health Organisation. The results revealed that precipitation with CO32- and PO43-, complexation with -OH and -COOH groups and electrostatic interaction with O-containing surface functional groups were the main mechanisms involved in the removal of multi-metals by biochars, and that selection of feedstock materials for biochar production is important to maximise remediation of multi-metals in contaminated water.

RESUMO

Nanofibers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/boehmite were prepared by electrospinning a homogeneous solution of PAN/DMF (dimethyl formamide). Enhancing the amount of boehmite nanoparticles (NPs) led to increase in the nanofibers' diameter. Samples had high pure water flux, which did not change significantly with boehmite concentration, but decreased with increasing electrospinning duration. Escherichia coli bacteria removal was remarkably more efficient, as it was enhanced from 72.33% to 97.37% with increase in the boehmite NPs' concentration from 0 to 10% wt. High bacterial removal efficiency could be attained by the large surface area of NPs, as well as the electrostatic force of attraction between NPs and microorganisms. The increase in boehmite concentration from 10 to 30 and 50% did not noticeably affect bacterial removal. Prolonging electrospinning time significantly enhanced bacteria removal. Hence, it was shown that 6-hour electrospinning of PAN/boehmite nanofiber layers composed of 50% boehmite led to 99.7%, 99.39%, 99.8%, and 74% E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus bacteria removal, particles' separation efficiency of 2 µm and cadmium adsorptivity, respectively, which were better than those obtained by using pure PAN nanofibers. E. coli bacterial removal efficiency of the sample was increased to 99.99% by repeating filtering four times. RESUMO

The pollution of Cadmium (Cd) species in natural water has attracted more and more attention due to its high cumulative toxicity. In the search for improved removal of cadmium from contaminated water, we characterized uptake on a recently identified nanomaterial (SiO2-Mg(OH)2) obtained by subjecting sepiolite to acid-base modification. The structural characteristics of SiO2-Mg(OH)2 were analyzed by means of SEM-EDS, Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD). Static adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of contact time, temperature, amount of adsorbent, and pH-value on the adsorption of Cd(II) by SiO2-Mg(OH)2. The results show that the pore structure of SiO2-Mg(OH)2 is well developed, with specific surface area, pore size and pore volume increased by 60.09%, 16.76%, and 43.59%, respectively, compared to natural sepiolite. After modification, the sepiolite substrate adsorbs Cd(II) following pseudo-second-order kinetics and a Langmuir surface adsorption model, suggesting both chemical and physical adsorption. At 298 K, the maximum saturated adsorption capacity fitted by Sips model of SiO2-Mg(OH)2 regarding Cd(II) is 121.23 mg/g. The results show that SiO2-Mg(OH)2 nanocomposite has efficient adsorption performance, which is expected to be a remediation agent for heavy metal cadmium polluted wastewater.

RESUMO

Heavy-metal pollution is becoming a worldwide problem severely threatening our health and ecosystem. In this study, we constructed a genetic-engineering-driven coassembly of synthetic bacterial cells and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for capturing heavy metals. The Escherichia coli cells were genetically engineered by introducing a de novo synthetic heavy-metal-capturing gene (encoding a protein SynHMB containing a six-histidine tag, two cystine-rich peptides, and a metallothionein sequence) and a synthetic type VI secretory system (T6SS) cluster of Pseudomonas putida, endowing the synthetic cells (SynEc2) with high ability of displaying the heavy-metal-capturing SynHMB on cell surface. MNPs were synthesized by a coprecipitation method and further modified by polyethylenimine (PEI) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). Owing to the surface exposure of six-histidine tag on the synthetic bacteria and carboxyl groups on the modified MNPs (MNP@SiO2-PEI-DTPA), the synthetic bacterial cells and MNPs coassembled to form biotic/abiotic complex exhibiting a self-developing characteristic. In the culture medium containing both Cd2+ and Pb2+, the coassemblies captured these heavy metals with high removal efficiency (>90% even at 50 mg/L of Cd2+ and 50 mg/L of Pb2+) and were conveniently recycled by artificial magnetic fields. Moreover, the coassemblies realized coremoval of organic carbon pollutants with the removal efficiency of >80%. This study builds a novel biotic/abiotic coassembling platform facilitated by genetic engineering and sheds light on development of artificial magnetic biological systems for efficient treatment of environmental pollution.

RESUMO

Remediation of soil heavy metal by biochar has been extensively studied. However, few studies focused on the role of biochar on the co-immobilization of cadmium (Cd(II)) and arsenate (As(V)) and related soil nutrient availability. Remediation tests were conducted with three types of pristine and ferric trichloride (FeCl3) modified biochar (rice, wheat, and corn straw biochar) in Cd-As co-contaminated soil, with application rates of 1, 5, and 10% (w/w) and the incubation of 1, 7, 10, and 15 days. Using TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) method, 10% of FeCl3 modified corn-straw derived biochar (FCB) had the highest immobilization efficiency of Cd(II) (63.21%) and As(V) (95.10%) after 10 days of the incubation. Iron-modified biochar immobilized higher fractions of water-soluble (F1) and surface-absorbed (F2) metal fractions than pristine biochar. For FCB amendment, Cd was mostly presented in the organic matter (OM) and sulfides associated (F4) and residual (F5) fractions (88.52%), as was found in the Fe-Al (oxides and hydroxides) (F3), F4, and F5 fractions (75.87%). FCB amendment increased soil pH values and available iron contents (p < 0.05), while no changes in soil available phosphorus content (p > 0.05). This study showed that FCB application reduces the environmental mobility of metals in Cd-As contaminated soil, while it also increases soil pH and available nutrient mobility, improving soil environmental quality and reducing remediation costs.

RESUMO

A high-efficiency graphene oxide-terminated hyperbranched amino polymer-carboxymethyl cellulose ternary nanocomposite (GO-HBP-NH2-CMC) was fabricated for adsorbing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, Raman, and XPS analyses showing its porous architecture, rough surface, abundant N- and O-containing functional groups providing enhanced binding ability towards Pb2+ and Cu2+. Experimental adsorption data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating the adsorption of GO-HBP-NH2-CMC towards Pb2+ and Cu2+ being a chemical and monolayer process. The maximum adsorption capacities of GO-HBP-NH2-CMC for Pb2+ and Cu2+ at 25 °C comprised 152.86 and 137.48 mg/g, respectively. The laboratory-scale experimental study into the Pb2+ and Cu2+ adsorption in a fixed-bed column was undertaken. Effects of flow rate, bed depth and influent metals concentration on the adsorption performance were assessed. Experimental data successfully correlated with the Adams-Bohart, Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models with the R2 exceeding 0.79. Density functional theory calculation was adopted to study interactions between functional groups at GO-HBP-NH2-CMC and heavy metals showing OH, NH2 and COOH moieties in GO-HBP-NH2-CMC being more likely to bind Pb2+ rather than Cu2+, while the binding abilities of CONH towards Pb2+ and Cu2+ were similar.
